HCL Infosystems Limited, India’s premier information enabler, leading ICT system integrator and Distribution company and the country’s largest PC manufacturer, today announced the unification of its various environment protection initiatives under the comprehensive ‘HCL eSafe’ program. This announcement has taken the industry – environment engagement to an altogether new level. The pronouncement of HCL eSafe program was marked by launch of a new line-up of ‘HCL eSafe’ desktop PCs that are compliant with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive.Earlier this year, HCL had introduced India’s first range of RoHS-compliant notebooks.

Under the ‘HCL eSafe’ program, the company will bring together its several voluntary initiatives to protect and safeguard the environment. HCL is the first IT company in the country to have all of its manufacturing plants complying to ISO: 14001. HCL is also the pioneering company in India to have set–up a comprehensive e-waste management program for its manufactured products through a tie-up with an authorized recycler.

Announcing ‘HCL eSafe’, Mr. George Paul, Executive Vice President, HCL Infosystems Limited said, “HCL eSafe is our endeavor to protect the environment, health and safety of all our stakeholders. Over the years, we have pioneered several voluntary initiatives in environment protection, ranging from environmentally-efficient manufacturing to e-waste recovery and disposal programs. Our desire to give a common and unified thrust forward to these as well as our future initiatives has given birth to the ‘HCL eSafe’ program. We are also glad to announce a new range of PCs with the ‘HCL eSafe’ logo that are RoHS-compliant and are thus environment-friendly.”

“We are certain that ‘HCL eSafe’ will not only provide our customers with the satisfaction of buying environment-friendly PCs from their trusted company, but also go on to set new industry benchmarks in environment protection measures,” Mr. George Paul added.

Personal computers complying with RoHS standards contain negligible or zero quantities of hazardous materials like lead, cadmium and mercury and are therefore cleaner and easily recyclable. Complying with the RoHS standards is a key step towards minimizing the future impact of e-waste on environment.

Mr. Vinnie Mehta, Executive Director, Manufacturers’ Association of Information Technology (MAIT) said, “With the growing demand for PCs and other electronic products in India, concerns over the environmental impact of e-waste are both timely and legitimate. HCL Infosystems therefore deserves applause for its voluntary initiatives in environment protection, as demonstrated by the launch of RoHS-compliant HCL PCs today. We can now expect other players to soon join HCL in taking similar initiatives, which will ensure a safe and rich environment for our country.”

The HCL eSafe program will also include several new public awareness initiatives targeted at informing various stakeholders about the impact of e-waste and their responsibility in its mitigation. One such direct initiative is targeted at increasing awareness among school children — the future generation of PC users — about the environmental impact of e-waste. The program directed at schools engages & educates the children with the help of specially designed and created literature on the importance of protection of environment and how they play a very significant role in protecting it. Another campaign aims to build customer awareness through HCL’s channel partners and its retail outlets.

The issue of e-waste management is assuming a mammoth dimension in today’s world with imports of hazardous waste into India though prohibited by law. HCL’s public awareness initiatives under HCL eSafe will complement the company’s long-running ‘HCL Best Assured’ campaign, which seeks to raise awareness about the unauthorized imports of old and counterfeit PC components into the country. HCL is also engaging with various stakeholders including industry associations, government bodies, partners and suppliers in support of a suitable legislation or framework for environment protection in the country.
